Former Chief Justice Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad today lent his support to an alliance between Pas and Umno, saying there was a real threat of Barisan Nasional (BN) being defeated at the next general election.

"The possibility of the BN federal government losing at GE14 is very real. The Federal government is led by Umno, and must be defended. We are working hard to ensure the government does not fall.

"If it sees that the BN federal government will fall, Pas should immediately join the BN government," he wrote in his column in Berita Harian today.

The remarks followed an admission by Pas Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz that his party had been cooperating with Umno.

This despite several Pas leaders including its candidate for Sungai Besar, Dr Abdul Rani Osman, denying any plans to work with Umno, saying the Islamist party was also against BN and the Najib administration.

Hamid, 74, said Pas may stand in elections on its own at the coming national polls.

He said Pas under the leadership of Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang now stood the best chance to implement its various goals by being part of the BN federal government.

Hamid, who is part of Perkasa, also urged the Malay right-wing group to join such an alliance.
